Blogging and Base Ten

12 Sep

Today in English we took an internet safety quiz and discussed how we never talk to or meet with strangers on line.  Also, we never give out personal information such as last name, address, phone number, or even the name of our town.   For more information on internet safety go here

Following our safety discussion we went to the computer lab and the students started to write their first blog post.  Each post has to be approved by me before it is published online.  I will also keep our sites private for now but I would like to go public so we can interact with students from around the world.   I would like to join the Kid Blog Challenge which will require going public.  More information will be sent home in a letter soon.

In math we talked about the base ten system and how each place differs by a factor of ten.

For example, going from ones to tens you multiply by 10, from 10s to 100s you multilply by 10.

Then we talked about the trick when multiplying by 10s, 100s or 1000s.

45 x 10 =

We simply take the 0 from the 10 and put it at the end of the 45 = 450.  This is a handy trick for multiplying.  We will take that a step further tomorrow by multiply numbers like 60 x 5.  Come back tomorrow to learn that strategy!
